Top 25 journal articles on smoking
Smoking is a well-established risk factor for many serious health conditions, including lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. Research has shown that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide.
Smoking damages nearly every organ in the body and increases the risk of several types of cancer, including lung, throat, bladder, kidney, and cervical cancer. It also increases the risk of respiratory infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis, and reduces overall lung function.
Smoking also increases the risk of heart disease by damaging the blood vessels and causing plaque buildup in the arteries. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke. In addition, smoking is a major risk factor for developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a group of lung diseases that make it hard to breathe.
Smoking during pregnancy can also lead to serious health problems for both mother and baby, including premature birth, low birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Quitting smoking can improve health and reduce the risk of smoking-related diseases. Studies have shown that the benefits of quitting smoking begin almost immediately and continue to increase over time.
